Akkarai was a project after our own heart. Our close friend Sangeeta Isvaran of Katradi has been working with girls from the village communities in Kalavai Koot Road, Ranipet district. She has been teaching them Bharathanatyam as an empowering skill and has been able to get one of them a job as a dance teacher in a school. Akkarai project of The Aseema Trust sought to bring together young girls in the threshold of womanhood from the city and the village and discuss the challenges they face as women and the strategies that could be adapted for a dignified life. They exchanged skills of Kattaikuttu movements and Bharathanatyam pieces and formed long bonds and learnt much of life and its charms. When the Katradi team of dancers from the village and Bengaluru performed at the Bharatha Kalakshetra auditorium, it was just the ultimate.
